Tennis: Poland's Świątek sails into Cincinnati quarterfinals

Poland's Iga Świątek stormed into the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open tennis tournament in the US state of Ohio, with a straight-sets win over France's Diane Parry on Wednesday.

The Polish world No. 5 defeated the 66th-ranked Parry 6-3, 6-3 in the women's singles round of 16, producing some of her best tennis of the tournament.

Świątek, who is the defending champion in Cincinnati, will next face the winner between Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina and Russian Diana Shnaider for a place in the semifinals.

Pegula ends Świątek's Cincinnati title defense

Third-seeded Jessica Pegula denied Iga Świątek a second straight Cincinnati crown, outlasting the Polish star 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a nearly three-hour semifinal battle Saturday.

The victory sends Pegula into Sunday's final and pushes Świątek, the tournament's defending champion and No. 7 seed, out of the top seven in Monday's world rankings — she will fall to eighth regardless of how the final unfolds. Pegula is assured of holding her No. 3 ranking either way.
